Clinical Placements at Nexus
Here at Nexus, we’re passionate about supporting the development of counsellors through the provision of clinical placement opportunities. Following a comprehensive induction and onboarding programme, students are appropriately assigned clinical work based on their ability, skill set and level of expertise.
Our clinical placement students are well supported through their line manager and an appointed mentor as well as monitoring their professional practice through the provision of clinical supervision. As a clinical placement student, you will be offered clinical hours working with our clients to support your journey to becoming a counsellor by enabling you to gain experience, develop your skill set and build your confidence to work with individuals who have been impacted by sexual abuse and abusive relationships.
Providing these opportunities is integral to supporting the future generation of counsellors to gain valuable clinical experience and develop their skills while future proofing the provision of trauma-informed clinical interventions for people impacted by sexual abuse and abusive relationships.
Applications for undertaking a Clinical Placement with Nexus are now closed for our 2025 intake and will re-open again in September 2025 for the next intake in 2026. Any applications made after 12 noon on Friday 11th October 2024 will not have been processed as part of the 2024/25 recruitment round and your information will not have been kept on file due to GDPR legislation.

Since beginning my clinical placement with Nexus, I had ongoing support from my mentor, clinical placement buddy and other members of the Nexus team who are always very willing to help. I found everyone to be really friendly and welcoming and have thoroughly enjoyed each week. In addition, I was able to complete extra training with Nexus which has really helped with client work. The online system that Nexus uses is well organised and helped to ensure that all necessary evaluations and notes were completed. I have recently qualified as a counsellor and I am excited to continue working with Nexus.

What’s it like to have a clinical placement with Nexus? For me, right from the initial interview I felt really welcomed and put at ease by the staff. Yes, I was a little apprehensive when I first started, and I found the work challenging at times but the support I felt from everyone was extraordinary. I feel really privileged to have had a placement in an agency where there is such a great sense of comradery. My placement was an incredible learning experience, not just with my own client work, but also seeing all the work that everyone at Nexus puts into to making it such a great, valuable, and much needed service.
Although I have met many of the Nexus team, my two main points of contact were Susan Ellison my clinical manager and Karen O’Neill who does a sterling job within the admin team. Susan, is very approachable and whilst I contacted her numerous times for help and advice, she always responded super quickly and nothing ever seemed a bother. The same has to be said of Karen who is often on the front desk when I see my clients. She gave me helpful hints on using Counsel 360 (online client management system) and helped me with emailing clients and rearranging my diary.
I was really taken aback when I received a lovely and unexpected surprise in being given an award for Empowerment as part of the Nexus Values Awards. I think this initiative really is a fabulous idea and makes us all realise that the whole team at Nexus are committed to doing the invaluable work of helping to make a difference in each other’s lives, as well as the lives of those who experience the trauma of domestic and sexual abuse and violence. I look forward to my time at Nexus every week and although the work can be challenging at times, it is very rewarding to feel that I am part of a team striving to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

My time on placement at Nexus was really good, I have learnt so much. It was a little daunting at first but with everyone being so helpful from the Admin team to the other counsellors and staff, it has made me feel part of a team that has helped me grow as a student counsellor. It’s been really good having a supportive team around me and getting lots of extra training.
