Launch of Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline held in Fermanagh

Over 4,300 calls to Helpline In initial 3 months of operation The Northern Ireland Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline was officially launched yesterday (Thursday 12 September 2019) in Fermanagh. Earlier this year, a new three-year contract was awarded to Nexus NI to provide and manage a 24-hour Helpline for victims of Domestic and Sexual Abuse from April 2019. The Helpline is often been the first step victims have taken in getting support.  The contract was awarded by the Department for Communities, the Department of Health and the Department of Justice. The first three months (April – June 2019) saw the Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline receiving over 4300 incoming phone calls. The group chose Nexus NI as their charity of the year to support through various fundraising and awareness activities which included a BBQ and a bag pack in ASDA. Nexus NI are the lead charity across Northern Ireland delivering services and support to victims of sexual violence and are passionate about tackling the myths and misconceptions that exist around it in society to ensure that victims and survivors have all the services they need. Nexus NI, alongside The Rainbow Project and Relate NI are delivering free Relationships and Sexuality Education Programmes across Northern Ireland to training agencies, youth clubs and regional colleges Topics include: consent, healthy relationships, sexual orientation, gender identity, puberty, contraception and STIs. Relationships and Sexuality Education focuses on participants needs, providing factual information to address their questions, in an environment which ensures they feel safe enough to discuss their issues free from ridicule and judgement. FREE Online Safety and Abuse Awareness Workshops For the attention of Pastoral Care Teachers: Nexus NI have secured funding in the Fermanagh and Omagh area up to February 2020 (excluding July/August) with much thanks to the The ARN Foundation to deliver FREE Online Safety and Abuse Awareness Workshops. The aim of the workshops are to provide young people with increased awareness regarding the internet and increased knowledge of abuse and ways to limit their risk of being affected by it.  Each pupil would also have increased knowledge of the support available for themselves or someone they know who is affected by abuse. NEXUS STATEMENT RE DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL ABUSE HELPLINE Nexus NI Interim Chief Executive, Karen Gallagher says: “We’re pleased to announce that access to the Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline via 0808 802 1414 has now been restored. We’ve been aware that people were having issues accessing the Domestic and Sexual Abuse helpline via certain mobile networks and landlines since Sunday evening. We have been working closely with our telecoms provider to identify and solve this issue as quickly as possible. Nexus NI are delighted to have been awarded the contract for the 24-hour Helpline for Victims of Domestic and Sexual Abuse. The helpline will offer much needed support, advice and referral for all victims of domestic and sexual abuse in Northern Ireland. Nexus NI will take over the service from Women’s Aid Federation Northern Ireland from 1 April 2019. Nexus NI offers services and support to people who have been affected by sexual violence across Northern Ireland. Our services include; supporting victims via specialist counselling, educating young people, training professionals and campaigning to change the myths and misconceptions that exist around sexual violence in society.
