Launch of Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline held in Fermanagh

Over 4,300 calls to Helpline In initial 3 months of operation The Northern Ireland Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline was officially launched yesterday (Thursday 12 September 2019) in Fermanagh. Earlier this year, a new three-year contract was awarded to Nexus NI to provide and manage a 24-hour Helpline for victims of Domestic and Sexual Abuse from April 2019. The Helpline is often been the first step victims have taken in getting support.  The contract was awarded by the Department for Communities, the Department of Health and the Department of Justice. The first three months (April – June 2019) saw the Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline receiving over 4300 incoming phone calls. Nexus NI are delighted to have been awarded the contract for the 24-hour Helpline for Victims of Domestic and Sexual Abuse. The helpline will offer much needed support, advice and referral for all victims of domestic and sexual abuse in Northern Ireland. Nexus NI will take over the service from Women’s Aid Federation Northern Ireland from 1 April 2019. Nexus NI offers services and support to people who have been affected by sexual violence across Northern Ireland. Our services include; supporting victims via specialist counselling, educating young people, training professionals and campaigning to change the myths and misconceptions that exist around sexual violence in society. Nexus host DIS.CO partners to develop distance counselling project

Nexus NI were delighted to host the third transnational meeting of European partners involved in the DIS.CO project on January 31 and February 1 in our Belfast office. DIS.CO is a two year Erasmus+ project that aims to develop, pilot and disseminate skills and knowledge for counselling female victims of violence at a distance. The project will promote innovative digital learning methods along with work-related digital tools. The partners were updated on all progress and relevant research completed to date.  In addition, plans were finalised for a Counselling at a Distance training course which takes place in Barcelona in May.  Nexus NI, along with other partners will then be involved in disseminating this learning to counsellors throughout Northern Ireland.  Watch this Space for further information and developments!

Nexus help launch new cybersafe initiative for teens

Nexus NI Operations Manager Helena Bracken and Training Lead Kristina Dyer last week travelled to Heraklion in Crete, Greece, for the kick off meeting of a new and exciting project called Cybersafe.  Nexus representatives were joined by a range of other partners from Estonia, Slovenia, Italy, Denmark and Holland and the meeting was hosted by the lead partner from Crete. The project will focus on teenagers aged 13 to 15 and the aim is to create an educational programme complemented with an interactive game which will help address and prevent gender specific cyber violence.  We are delighted to be part of this committed team of people and look forward to contributing our own local knowledge and skills to the project.  Watch this space for updates over the coming months!

We have a number of job opportunities with the new Helpline service available Helpline Operators - sessional and volunteer posts are available.  These posts offer flexible working and the ability to work remotely from home.  Nexus will provide comprehensive training and give the opportunity to help and support victims and give advice to professionals and concerned friends and family. World-renowned speakers will join service providers, victims and statutory agencies next week in a bid to address the future for survivors of sexual violence and abuse in Northern Ireland. The Nexus NI Annual Conference, taking place on Monday 4th February at the Dunsilly Hotel will address the future for Prevention, Protection and Prosecution for those affected by sexual violence. Held during Sexual Violence Week, the conference is aiming to open honest discussions about the future for those affected by sexual abuse, including addressing key areas regarding prosecution and access to trials. Former Chief Crown Prosecutor for NW England, Nazir Afzal OBE will be the conference keynote speaker, addressing the key issues around the judicial system and the barriers to prosecution in Northern Ireland and beyond.
