Local women in Enniskillen have come together to establish a new Tangent Club for women aged 45 years and over. Part of the 4 Club Round Table Family, the Tangent Club is about having fun, making new friendships and fundraising for local causes.

The club has chosen Nexus NI as their charity of the year to support through various fundraising and awareness-raising activities, starting with a summer BBQ to celebrate their official Charter into the Tangent Association.

Commenting on this significant event, founding member, Ruth Loizides said:

“Our first fundraising event, which takes place on Saturday 18th August at the Tully Mill restaurant, is very important as it will officially establish our club and launch our year-long partnership with Nexus NI.

We read about the great work Nexus is doing locally in Enniskillen to support victims and survivors of sexual violence but they need support to meet increasing demand for their specialist counselling services.  We decided that as a group we could give something back to the local community by supporting this important work. We have a series of fun, social events planned over the year and we hope to raise as much as possible for Nexus, as well as increasing awareness of their work in the town.”

Karen Dunlop-Wainwright, Community Fundraising Lead with Nexus NI said:

“We are delighted to have the support from the ladies in Enniskillen Tangent club and very much look forward to working alongside them in the months ahead.  Their support means a great deal to us, helping us raise vital funds to reach more people who need us and break the silence and taboos that often surround sexual violence.

We know that people living in small, rural communities can find it even more difficult to disclose abuse due to feelings of fear, shame and guilt.  This is why it’s so important that we speak out and let people know that the abuse was not their fault, they are not alone, and that there is strength in coming forward and seeking help.”

Restricted funding means the Nexus is currently able to see 13 people each week in Enniskillen but has a waiting list of over 50 people across the district.  Locally, Nexus also works closely with the Aisling Centre and Fermanagh Women’s Aid to offer services and support to men, women and children who have been affected by sexual violence.

Enniskillen Tangent club are inviting men and women to come along to their summer BBQ fundraiser and support the work of Nexus while enjoying great food in beautiful surroundings beside Florence Court Estate.
